JDRF Leads the Fight Against Type 1 Diabetes

Recent posts

Nearly 371 million people suffer from Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) around the globe, and 1.25 million of those affected are right here in the U.S. Luckily, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is on a mission to end T1D once and for all.

JDRF is a global organization focused exclusively on T1D research. Their objective is to accelerate medical breakthroughs that can treat, prevent, and eventually cure T1D.

Unlike Type 2 Diabetes, T1D is an autoimmune disease with no cure and that isn’t caused by diet or lifestyle choices.  Essentially, the body stops producing insulin, a hormone that’s essential in pulling energy from the food we eat.  Without insulin, T1D patients must constantly monitor their blood-sugar levels and inject insulin as needed.  When T1D isn’t managed properly, it can lead to life-threatening conditions like hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, and kidney failure.

To date, JDRF has funded over $2 billion in research and founded dozens of U.S. locations as well as 6 overseas affiliates.  There are currently 34 states with active JDRF grants.  One of the organization’s major projects is the Artificial Pancreas Program, in which scientists are developing technology to regulate and release insulin without the constant blood sugar level monitoring.

All of JDRF’s work is funded through grassroots donations and advocacy.  Every year, JDRF sponsors teams in runs and athletic events like the 2019 Walt Disney World Marathon and hosts galas and other fundraising events.  However, one of the easiest ways to support JDRF is through charitable donations via its official website.
